Projects Abroad is in need of Physical Therapy interns in Tanzania to help to support local people who will benefit from your time and care. It is also a chance for you to gain international experience that will enhance your resume and medical knowledge.
As a physical therapist in Tanzania, you will work in the physical therapy department of a hospital. Patients are accident victims and have suffered various injuries such as broken bones and burns. You will be involved mainly in the rehabilitation of these patients to help their recovery.
To participate in this project, interns must have completed at least one year of physical therapy studies or training by the time they join.
Interning Abroad as a Physical Therapist in Tanzania
As a Physical Therapy intern you will shadow local staff, learning by observing. If you have physical therapy experience and show initiative and enthusiasm to your colleagues, you may be given more responsibility. Staff are welcoming and eager to show you how physical therapy is practiced in their hospital. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about physical therapy in the developing world. Facilities may be basic and you may have to be creative in your approach to the care of patients.
Previous interns have taken part in physical therapy outreach work. This often involves working with patients who cannot leave their homes. Having physical therapists who can visit patients in their own homes provides care they would not otherwise have access to.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Tanzania Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
You will live with a local Tanzanian host family for the duration of your internship with Projects Abroad. There will be many other volunteers to socialize with during your free time and you will be able to explore the local area with them.
While Physical Therapy internships in Tanzania are available to participate in for two weeks, and you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
