Volunteer consults with hospital staff on a midwifery project in Morocco

On a Projects Abroad Midwifery internship in Morocco you can work at one of our partner hospitals in Rabat, the capital city. You will learn from medical staff working to help women who depend upon the services of these maternity units to give birth safely.

Your role will depend upon your qualifications and experience, as well as the needs of the facilities. You will shadow qualified members of staff and your local supervisor in the hospital where you are working. By observing the doctors and nurses who offer maternity care you can witness births and the conditions and treatments that need to be performed. You will have the opportunity to discuss each case with the local staff to improve your knowledge.

If you show enthusiasm and initiative, and you develop a good relationship with the medical staff, you may find that you gain enough trust to be given a more active role. You must prove yourself to be trustworthy and competent before you are given more responsibilities.

Interning Abroad as a Midwife in Morocco with Projects Abroad

Your workday will normally be from 8am to 4pm when you will be working at the hospital with your supervisor. In your free time, there are plenty of opportunities to socialise with other volunteers and local people, as well as numerous travel opportunities. By living with a local host family, you will be welcomed into a warm Moroccan home and can use the opportunity to practice your French or Arabic language skills.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Morocco Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

In order to participate in a Midwifery internship in Morocco you need to have completed a minimum of one year of a related degree and speak an intermediate level of French or Arabic. If you need to improve your language skills before starting your placement, you can join an Arabic or French Language Course, where you will taught by a qualified local teacher.

Midwifery internships in Morocco are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.

Volunteer Profile Volunteer Sofia R. shares her review from the Midwifery project in Morocco
Sofia R.
My mentor was excellent and guided me all the way. All the pediatric nurses always asked me questions about nursing in the UK and told me how nursing was in Morocco. Being on the ward from 9am till 4pm Monday to Friday I never saw a Pediatric doctor on the ward all the time, where in the UK there will be at least 1 pediatric doctor on the ward all the time.
