Volunteers on the Medicine Project in Morocco work with local staff in a hospital

As a Projects Abroad Medicine intern in Morocco, you can gain international medical experience in a hospital or clinic in the capital city of Rabat. You can focus on one department or work in a variety of areas.
On your first day of work, you will be introduced to your internship supervisor who will always be on hand to help you throughout your time at the hospital or clinic. Before you arrive in Morocco, you will discuss your internship options with a member of staff and choose which departments you would prefer. Options include dermatology, gynecology, pediatrics, and surgery.
On a Medicine internship in Morocco, your role is that of an intern. You will shadow a local doctor who will act as your supervisor. By observing first-hand the work the doctors and nurses do, you will learn about different conditions and treatments and can discuss the cases with them to improve your medical knowledge.

In order to participate in a Medicine internship in Morocco you need to have completed a minimum of one year of medical school or a related program and speak an intermediate level of French. If you would like to brush up on your language skills before starting your internship, we offer a French Language Course with a qualified local teacherin Rabat.

Interning Abroad in Medicine in Morocco with Projects Abroad

Although you will find that you spend a lot of time learning by shadowing staff, it is sometimes possible to have a more active role. If you show enthusiasm and initiative and you manage to develop a good relationship with the medical staff, you may find that you gain enough trust to be given more responsibility. As with any job - particularly in the field of medicine - you must prove yourself to be trustworthy before given responsibilities.

Did you know? Population growth forces many local Moroccans to live in informal ‘tin cities’ which often have no water and sanitation facilities. This leaves residents vulnerable to the spread of communicable diseases, and the need for improved medical services.

Your workday will normally be from 8am to 4pm working at the hospital or clinic with your supervisor. Sometimes you may be asked to spend time working one-on-one with a patient with the supervision of a nurse. If you have any particular preferences or areas of interest, be sure to mention them when you apply.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Morocco Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

In your free time, you will be able to socialize with other volunteers, interns, and locals, as well as take advantage of the many travel opportunities throughout Morocco. By living with a local host family, you will be welcomed into a warm Moroccan home, with whom you can practice your French language skills.

Medicine internships in Morocco are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
