Midwifery Internships in Mongolia

  • ROLE: To gain valuable midwifery experience through supporting women during their labor and post birth
  • Requirements: Interns must have completed at least three years of midwifery studies
  • ACCOMMODATION: Host family
  • LENGTH OF PLACEMENT: From 2 weeks
  • START DATES: Flexible

As a Midwifery intern in Mongolia with Projects Abroad you can gain international midwifery experience alongside dedicated and caring local midwives.

Midwifery interns are based at the State Maternity Hospital in Ulaanbaatar. The standard of the facilities is basic and patients often travel a long way to attend appointments and give birth. Interns work in three departments - pre-natal and post-natal care, the delivery suite, and the operating theater.

To participate in this project, you must have completed at least three years of midwifery studies.

Interning Abroad as a Midwife in Mongolia with Projects Abroad

As an intern you will shadow and observe the other midwives while they work. Although in accordance with Mongolian law you will not be able to directly treat patients, you will be able to help support women throughout their labor and post birth. You can also provide practical assistance to the other midwives. The more you show you are enthusiastic and competent, the more you may be offered to help with. The staff will want you to learn as much as possible during your placement and will answer as many of your questions as they can.

Projects Abroad arranges monthly training workshops for medical interns in Mongolia. These may be lessons about traditional treatments, the history of the Mongolian healthcare system, or basic medical procedures, such as how to check patients’ blood pressure.

During your time as a Midwifery intern you will live with a Mongolian host family, who will be hospitable and welcoming. You can also spend time with the other Projects Abroad volunteers during your time off, and there is plenty to see and do together in and around Ulaanbaatar.

Midwifery internships in Mongolia are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.

Abbie Tressider
Knowing that this was the career I had in mind before coming to Mongolia, I was particularly interested in the cultural differences of the job and took note of each birth I witnessed during my time. As well as confirming that this was the job for me, the time I spent with the different teams at the hospital was absolutely incredible. Read more...

Interns seeking a different cultural experience have the option of participating on a more unique project for one week at the end of their project.
