Important information for your journey to Mexico

We hope you are getting prepared and excited for your trip. It’s not long now!

This page provides important information that explains what to prepare before departing and what will happen when you arrive at your destination. Please make sure you have a saved copy of this page on your phone, or a printed copy to refer to.

Travel Checklist

One week before departing you should go over the following checklist to make sure you have everything you need before heading to the airport:

  • Valid passport for 6 months after your return
  • Proof of Sufficient Funds (printed bank statement or a screenshot of your bank balance). Just as a precaution, it may not be required by the immigration officer.
  • Local address in Mexico written down on a piece of paper and on your phone. Your accommodation address can be found here.
  • Depending on your first point of entry you may be required to fill out the Multiple Migratory Form for Air Travel (FMME Aérea). This will be available upon arrival at the airport if needed.
  • A printed copy of your flight itinerary including proof of exit.
  • ESTA - if you will transit via the United States
  • Country Director, Oliver Garcia's number  +52 3318633342 and emergency numbers (see below) added in WhatsApp and written down on paper in case your mobile battery dies

Arriving at the airport

Once you land in Mexico, go through the immigration desk where they will stamp your passport.

Head to your next domestic flight (if that is the case), then to the baggage claim area to wait for your luggage. Once you have collected your luggage, customs may ask you to open your bags to show the contents (when packing remember the country regulations regarding medicine, tools, and food). They might ask you to leave behind any restricted items.

Use your host family address on the Arrivals Card where it asks for your address.

Once you have cleared the Immigration desk you can move on to the baggage reclaim area where you wait until your bag arrives. Then make your way to the exit, which is signposted in English.

Meeting our staff

Our staff will meet you at the airport arrivals hall. They will hold a sign saying Projects Abroad.

They will then take you directly to your host family.

If you are joining the Sea Turtle Conservation Project and you land in Guadalajara early in the morning, they will take you to the bus station and place you on the bus to Cuyutlán (which is the last stop). If you land in the afternoon, you will spend one night in Guadalajara with one of our host families and then our team will pick you up next morning to take you to the bus station.

In the extremely rare event that the staff member coming to meet you is late and you do not see anyone holding a Projects Abroad sign at the airport or if you experience any flight delays, please call Oliver Garcia's number  +52 3318633342. Stay at the airport in the arrivals hall until our staff member finds you.
