In Ghana, there is a shortage of qualified physical therapists to provide specialized care. In addition, many care facilities such as special needs centers receive little to no funding, and cannot provide any form of therapy for patients and residents. As a professional physical therapist in Ghana, you will make a significant impact on patients’ lives and become a source of expertise and support for local staff and caregivers.

How can volunteer Physical Therapists help in Ghana?
You will use your training and experience to treat patients who need physical therapy desperately. If you are interested in working in a clinical setting, you can choose to volunteer at a hospital in Cape Coast. If you would prefer to work at a special needs center, you will be placed in Accra, Cape Coast or the Akuapem Hills.
The special needs centers would benefit enormously from your presence. The center in Accra only has a part-time physical therapist, despite having a large number of residents who require attention. The centers in Cape Coast and the rural Akuapem Hills have no physical therapists and a lack of equipment, so the children and adults there receive very little treatment.
You will get involved with the following tasks:
- Conduct assessments, analysis of patients, planning and treatment of patients.
- Adapt treatments according to patient analysis
- Educate local staff, family members and caregivers about conditions, prognosis and home exercise programmes
- Help identify training needs of local physical therapists (this is a great way to share new techniques and methods, which might not be known in Ghana)
- Assist with training, advising and supporting local physical therapists in the management of patient care
A typical workday starts at 8am and ends in the afternoon around 2pm (Monday to Friday). It is possible that you will work outside of these hours, depending on the placement, and how you develop your role with your project supervisor. This project runs all year and volunteers can join from a minimum of two weeks.
What will I gain from this project?
Working with limited resources in under-staffed facilities will encourage you to adapt and develop your existing expertise to a different working environment. You will often face challenges not experienced in your home country. Through this professional exchange, you will learn different methodologies and techniques in your own discipline.
You will also live within the local community, giving you the chance to learn about a different culture and way of life, as well as the opportunity to share some of your own culture with those you interact with.

What skills or qualifications do I need?
If you have completed at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical therapy or a related subject, then you are perfectly suited to this project. We prefer professional volunteers to have at least two years’ work experience in their relevant field, but as this profession is lacking in Ghana, it is not a strict requirement.
