What are Middle School Specials?
Our Middle School Specials are organized group service-learning trips for students between the ages of 12 and 15. Each program takes place over two weeks on specific dates throughout the year.
These projects are similar to our popular High School Specials for students aged 15 to 18, but a little different. We focus on learning through experience, gaining new perspectives on world, and talking about why volunteering and helping others is important. Cultural exchange is valuable for all ages, and middle school is the perfect time to learn about people in other countries.
Our local staff and youth camp experts run all the activities on a Middle School Special program. They make sure everything runs smoothly so students focus on the most important part of the trip – exploring and learning with new friends. Itineraries also include socials, cultural workshops, and a weekend trip.
Our program fee includes:
- Three meals a day
- Safe, clean, and comfortable accommodation
- Transport in country
- All activities, social events, and a weekend trip
- 24/7 support from our staff
- Travel and medical insurance
Support and Safety on Middle School Specials
Traveling abroad at a young age is a daunting experience. To make the experience as comfortable and smooth as possible, we provide constant support and supervision. From the start, we will be there to answer questions, give advice, and assist with booking flights.
Before the journey begins, we invite students and parents or teachers to attend an optional orientation held in the US. This orientation day is not mandatory, although we do encourage you to participate. The goal of the orientation program is to answer any remaining questions, talk about what to expect on arrival in destination, and do team-building exercises for students to get to know each other.
Although you can book your own flights for your Middle School Special trip, we encourage you to book your flights via our travel team, so that we can ensure you are on the same flight as all the other participants.
When orientation ends, our staff travel with participants, providing guidance with the arrival process, and making sure that everyone arrives safely and settles in. On arrival, we give a detailed introduction to the country and the program and explain the activities we will do.
Our staff in-destination are available 24/7 to help with any problems. Read more about our Safety and Backup procedures.
Accommodation for Middle School Specials
Most of our programs accommodate students with a local host family. This is a great way to get to know a country and its people, and learn about the culture and traditions first-hand. We choose our host families carefully and monitor them for security, comfort, and friendliness. Students staying with a host family will always share a room with another student of the same age and sex.
If students are not staying with a host family, they will stay at Projects Abroad accommodation, like a dormitory. This accommodation is safe and clean and students will always share a room with a student of the same age and sex.
