By doing a Pharmacy Internship in Sri Lanka with Projects Abroad, you will learn a great deal about the pharmaceutical practices in a developing country. Sri Lankan medical facilities are often low on resources, or of a basic standard. You will spend time with skilled professionals and learn much through observing clinical settings and offering assistance where needed.
You will also help on medical outreaches, thereby providing basic medical services to communities often with little or no access to healthcare. Your influence on a Pharmacy Internship will also greatly benefit the local staff you interact with, as any new skills and knowledge you bring to your workspace will help improve the medical services that those in need receive.
Your Role as a Pharmacy Intern in Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, you will be placed at a general hospital in the medicine dispatch unit, working under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. They will assist and mentor you throughout your placement, and will always be available to answer any queries you might have.
One of the most important aspects of your project will be the time you spend observing and helping the pharmacists as they dispense medication. You will assist the staff with packing medication and, if you are confident with the process, help with do data capturing under their supervision.
Outreach Projects during your Pharmacy Internship in Sri Lanka
Throughout your placement, you will take part in medical outreach projects. Here, you will provide local communities with free basic medical services and prescribed medication under the supervision of a pharmacist. You will also help raise awareness on various healthcare issues, by presenting talks and workshops at schools and community centers.
To further your skills and to give you additional insight into the medical field, a local doctor will be holding a monthly seminar, which is open to all Projects Abroad Medicine & Healthcare volunteers.
You will have plenty of free time during your time abroad, where you can explore your surroundings and socialize with other volunteers. You will also live with a local host family, giving you the chance to immerse yourself completely in Sri Lankan culture.
