Our Medicine internships in Ghana are based in Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana as well as in Dodowa. You will be based in a hospital working with patients who have a wide range of ailments.
When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with your Projects Abroad coordinator and the internship supervisor. Most interns choose to spend time in a variety of departments such as accident and emergency, pediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, physical therapy, and surgery.
Interning in Medicine in Ghana with Projects Abroad
Interns with no medical experience will be placed in Dodowa, as there is more supervision and instruction for volunteers who are there on an observational and learning bases. If you are a professional volunteer, you will be placed at a hospital in Cape Coast. Interns with medical experience, but who are not fully qualified, can be based at either location.
The hospitals provide an excellent backdrop for learning about medical practices in another country. On a daily basis you will experience different approaches to medicine and treatments and see conditions that are unusual in Europe and North America, such as malaria and typhoid.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ghana Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
While interning in Ghana you will live with a local host family. Ghana is one of our most popular destinations, so there will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer community available to join you.
Did you know? Most Ghanaians are not able to afford National Health Insurance, and as a result, often cannot afford good medical care. In the absence of good care, many Ghanaians resort to self-medication and prayer camps for solutions.
Medical Outreach and Public Health Projects in Ghana
Medicine interns in all regions also take part in regular medical outreach work that involves treating children with minor wounds or illnesses from small villages. Sometimes interns pay a visit to orphanages for basic check-ups. If you are interested in Public Health you can do this outreach work full time on our Public Health Project.
Anyone interested in working with HIV and AIDS patients could instead join our HIV/AIDS Project based in hospitals and including community outreach work.
Medicine internships in Ghana are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills volunteering abroad as a professional in Ghana. If you are a high school student and first-time traveler you may want to consider our High School Special programs in Ghana.
“My trip to Cape Coast, Ghana was an incredible experience that I will never forget. It allowed me to learn and experience so much and to experience a new way of life very different than that at home. I will never forget my great experiences at the hospital, day care center, Leprosy camp, outreach and traveling. I was able to really see the dramatic differences in the way of life and also experience and see things that you could not even dream about at home. I would highly recommend Ghana as a Projects Abroad destination.” Read more...
