Volunteering with Projects Abroad on a medical placement in Bolivia gives you the opportunity to observe the medical profession first hand in a developing country. As a volunteer, you will be based in Cochabamba where you can observe the doctors as they treat patients at various health centers and hospitals. You will also have the chance to get involved with worthwhile outreach work in rural communities and orphanages.
During your placement, you will also be provided with some Spanish lessons and medical workshops during your placement. Our volunteers are encouraged to ask questions and take notes, so that they can have the most meaningful learning experience possible.
Medical volunteers in Bolivia will be involved in a variety of tasks, including dental outreach work at an orphanage. You will also travel to a remote village to help treat children and the elderly, as there is no nearby hospital for locals to go to. Here, volunteers will be involved in checking vital signs like blood pressures, pulse rates, and temperature.
In Bolivia, volunteers live with a local host family, which immerses them fully in Bolivian culture. It is also a fantastic opportunity to practice and improve your Spanish. You might even be able to pick up some of the local language, Quechua!
On the weekend, you will travel with our staff and the other volunteers to Lake Titicaca, and visit the Tiwanaku ruins and Sun Island.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Bolivia Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
