Volunteer Teaching Track and Field in Ethiopia
As a Projects Abroad Track and Field volunteer, you have the opportunity to teach sports in a developing country famous for its world class athletes. You will train with local Ethiopians at a track and field club several mornings a week and then teach a variety of sports to children at a local middle and high school in the afternoons.
Volunteers joining the sports project in Ethiopia can choose to combine track and field and teaching physical education in schools or just focus just on the physical education element of the project.
Whether you are on a gap year, on a vacation from work or studies, or on a career break, you can gain a large amount of work experience working alongside some highly skilled staff and athletes. You don't have coaching experience to take part. An interest and passion for track and field and sports in general is all that's needed.
Volunteering as a Sports Coach in Ethiopia with Projects Abroad
The track and field element of the project involves volunteers training at least three mornings a week with local Ethiopians at a track and field center. You will train in different locations with one of the 20 athletes from the center. You will also take part in long distance running in the event of an official road-race event.
Having completed the early morning training, volunteers will then teach a variety of sports to children aged 11-16 at a local middle and high school. The sports that are normally taught at schools in Ethiopia are aerobics, track and field, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Depending on your ability and confidence you may shadow and help the local staff or take your own lessons.
Each class has two sports lessons per week, so your day will be spent teaching a variety of age groups. You will be assigned a supervisor who will be on hand to offer you lesson advice and guidance.
Depending on the school’s requests, you may have the opportunity to coach a team from the school.
By teaching sports in Ethiopia, you have the chance to watch your student’s confidence grow. As you work with them to develop their talents, you will witness first-hand how their increased self-esteem impacts on their personal relationships.
The sports project in Ethiopia offers you the unique experience of not only improving your personal ability as an athlete, but also gaining invaluable work experience teaching sports in a school.
This project is unavailable during the school break, from July to September.
You can join a Sports project in Ethiopia for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills as a professional. Read more about opportunities for skilled volunteers in Ethiopia.
