In Laos, a third of the population lives below the global poverty line, which means that opportunities for most children are severely limited. They are also often malnourished and have little or no access to healthcare services. As a volunteer on a Projects Abroad Care project, you will work with these children in under-resourced care centers and kindergartens, helping to provide general care and educational support. This will be a challenging, but rewarding experience for any volunteer, whether you are on a gap year, career break, or looking for a meaningful experience during a vacation.
The main goal of the Care project is to support early childhood development. You will assist local staff and focus on teaching basic life skills and provide essential care while monitoring individual child development. Your daily tasks may involve reading to the children and working individually with local staff to build their English capacity.
All Care volunteers in Laos are supervised by local staff. In addition to your work at the placement, you may also have the chance to work directly in the communities helping to raise awareness of children’s rights.
Our Care projects are based in Laos’ capital city, Vientiane.
Volunteering on a Care Project in Laos with Projects Abroad
Your role at your Care placement will be a varied one. Every task you participate in, even those on a basic level, will help make a difference, from feeding the younger children to teaching personal hygiene. Your presence alone also makes a significant impact: friendship and support are some of the key things you can offer while on this placement. Whether you are helping children with educational activities or teaching them a new game, the time and attention you give to them is invaluable.
Working hours will depend on the placement and individual schedules. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel.
Projects Abroad is happy to provide extra help and resources for Care volunteers. This may include buying arts and craft materials or arranging a day where all the volunteers help to renovate a play area at one of the kindergartens or care centers. If you have any ideas, please let our local staff know.
You can join the Care Project in Laos for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
