As a Medicine intern in Argentina, you will gain a great deal of valuable international work experience alongside some of the most skilled doctors in the country. Interning abroad on a Medicine placement in Argentina can be done as part of a gap year or for students on a sumer break or semester abroad.
Our Medicine interns work in rotations at different hospitals in and around Cordoba. This enables them to have a broad range of experiences in different medicine and healthcare departments. These include Trauma, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Optical, Cardiology, Radiology, Gynecology, and Obstetrics.
While the shell of some hospital buildings may look slightly neglected, the facilities and the healthcare provided are generally of a good standard on a par with many hospitals in North America. You will have the opportunity to observe medical procedures in both the overburdened multidisciplinary government hospitals and the smaller “Dispensarios” that operate in more rural communities.
Your Role on a Medicine Internship in Argentina
Within the hospitals, you will be given the chance to shadow doctors and nurses, help take patient histories, observe surgery, attend medical lectures with medical students, and perhaps even perform basic medicine and healthcare procedures. In the community, you could find yourself giving a child a general health check, assisting in the provision of vaccinations, and giving advice on nutrition or pregnancy prevention.
Whether you are a student joining us before going to a medical, or already have medical knowledge and experience, the doctors and dentists in Argentina are eager for you to learn from them. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn - and also to help staff with their duties - will ensure that your experience is second to none.
As part of our medical projects in Argentina, you will be able to participate in workshops and outreach work organized by our local staff. These may include activities like joining a dissection class or participating in educational programs to raise awareness on important health topics like nutrition, personal hygiene, and prevention of common illnesses.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Argentina Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
An intermediate level of Spanish is required for all Medicine & Healthcare internships in Argentina to ensure that you can interact fully with both the local staff and patients. Interns should also dress professionally for this international medical internship.
“I am a 24-year-old aspiring doctor. After completing my M.S. degree in Physiology and Neurobiology, I was interested in pursuing a cultural immersion experience that would also help me decide if medicine was the right career path for me. In retrospect, Projects Abroad helped me achieve both of these goals.” Read more...
While interning in Argentina with Projects Abroad you will live with a host family near to your work placement. You will find a lot to do in Cordoba and many other Projects Abroad volunteers to get to know.
Did you know? The Argentinean health system is structured to combat infectious diseases and injuries, however, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases are the deadliest causes of harm overall.
Medicine internships in Argentina are available for shorter periods than the usual 4-week minimum for medical projects. While you will be able to gain valuable experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
