As a Projects Abroad Dentistry intern in Tanzania you can work alongside skilled medical professionals, learning about the dentistry profession in a different culture. You will be working in dental clinics that have few resources and you will learn a lot about how the dental profession works in a developing country. You will be placed in clinics in Arusha.
Dentistry interns are placed in Dental departments that are attached to hospitals. The departments deal with the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of dental problems as well as the investigation and treatment of mouth disorders. You will also see various procedures such as tooth extractions.
Your role will be to observe the dentist and their staff throughout the day. By shadowing the staff, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and review cases. If you have dental experience and are enthusiastic and willing you may be given more responsibility. This could be helping set up the instruments for the dentists and assisting them while they treat patients.
Interning Abroad as a Dentist in Tanzania
If you are pro-active and organized, you could help facilitate an outreach program. This could involve visiting schools and childcare centers to promote the importance of oral hygiene to the children. Projects Abroad will be able to help in setting this up with you.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Tanzania Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
While you are interning in Tanzania, you will live with one of our warm and welcoming host families. There is a lot to see in and around Dar es Salaam and Arusha so you will not be short of things to do.
Dentistry internships in Tanzania are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
It was great to be able to assist the dental team with procedures and also learn a great deal about dentistry in general as well as see some of the uncommon and complex cases faced here in Tanzania, such as abscesses and oral cancer. Read more...
