Teaching in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador as a Projects Abroad volunteer will give you a new perspective on this developing country and allow you to gain invaluable teaching and classroom-based work experience. The focus is on conversational English, so you do not need any formal qualifications or TEFL training. Whether you are volunteering during your gap year, a career break, or as a worthwhile vacation, you will have an important role to play teaching in one of our partner schools.
Our Teaching projects in Ecuador are based in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on the island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands. There is an increasing demand to learn English among Ecuador’s young population and speaking English is essential to getting a job in the islands’ thriving tourist industry.
Volunteering as a Teacher in Ecuador
In Ecuador, you can choose to volunteer at the Projects Abroad English Center, based in our offices, in government elementary and high schools, or you can do both. Lessons in government schools take place in the mornings, and those at the English Center are in the afternoons.
At schools, you will work with students from the ages of 6 to 16 years old and help local teachers improve the students’ English pronunciation. By teaching fun, inclusive lessons you can develop the students’ confidence and contribute to the improvement of their language skills. Your students are sure to be interested in you and your life, and you can take advantage of this to get them talking to you and each other.
In most schools you will either teach classes on your own or teach classes together with another Teaching volunteer. If you have strengths in other languages, like French or German, you can assist with teaching these too. You can also help with teaching other subjects you are interested in, such as science, mathematics, IT, drama, art, music, or physical education.
Although you do not need to speak Spanish to volunteer as a teacher in Ecuador, learning a few basics will be helpful. You can choose to sign up for a Spanish Language Course before or after your placement.
Did you know? Around 97% of children between 5 and 17 years old go to school, which represents big progress in the fight against not only illiteracy, but also child labor.
Our English program in Ecuador also offers free English classes for children in the community. These take place in the afternoons and evenings. If you would like to get involved further and teach after normal school hours, you have the option of teaching here and contributing to a valuable community resource.
Additionally, you can work with teenagers from the ages of 14 to 17 and organize various social and conservation activities for them. These activities are crucial as they give youth the opportunity to do something constructive with their free time.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ecuador Teaching Management Plan.
Volunteering at a Teaching Placement in Ecuador with Projects Abroad
The impact you have on the lives of your students will be obvious, but you will also be part of a much larger volunteer network, which is making a lasting positive contribution to the wider community. It will be an experience you never forget.
If you volunteer between March and April, you can work at a summer camp for children aged 3-11. At the summer camp you can teach English, art, or coach sport (swimming, basketball, soccer, or any other sport you are skilled in).
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
I grew to absolutely love the children and spent breaks talking to them and sometimes joining in their soccer games. Nearer the end of my placement it was getting close to Christmas, and so I asked Dorys if I could teach the children about Christmas back in England and maybe teach them some Christmas carols in English. She happily agreed and I spent a week teaching all the different classes about songs, Christmas pudding and making cards. Read more...
