We hope you are getting prepared and excited for your trip. It’s not long now!
This page provides important information that explains what to prepare before departing and what will happen when you arrive at your destination. Please make sure you have a saved copy of this page on your phone, or a printed copy to refer to.
Travel Checklist
One week before departing you should go over the following checklist to make sure you have everything you need before heading to the airport:

- Valid passport for at least 6 months from date of entry to Peru.
- Travel Insurance covering
- Proof of Sufficient Funds (printed bank statement or a screenshot of your bank balance, and/or your Projects-Abroad invoice as it shows that you have paid all you need while in your placement)
- A printed copy of your flight itinerary.
- Local address in Peru: Taricaya EcoReserve, Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios, Peru.
- ESTA - if you will transit via the United States
- Emergency phone numbers added to your mobile phone and written down on a piece of paper in case your mobile battery dies (see below)
Arriving at the airport
Lima airport is very well organized (it is considered one of the best airports in Latin America) and it is easy to move around. It will be your point of entry into Peru.
You need to go through customs here. Please be aware, despite what airline and airport staff might say, you will need to pick up your luggage upon arrival in Lima and then check in again for your domestic flight.
Once you pass customs and leave the arrivals area, continue forward to the check-in desks at the other end of the airport. If staying overnight in Lima, be sure that the hotel sends a taxi to pick you up and drop you off the next day.
If you have limited time during your transfer from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, then you may prefer to check your luggage all the way to Puerto Maldonado from your departing airport. Ask the airline what they suggest to do.
If your luggage has not arrived at Lima, please go to the airline and ask them to fill out your baggage disclaimer form and bring it with you to Puerto Maldonado.
When you arrive at Puerto Maldonado Airport (a quite small airport), please collect your bags and proceed to the exit.
