What you can expect

Your days will combine meaningful service work with cultural discovery as you become part of a Fijian community and contribute to collaborative education and development projects in the heart of the islands.

Support local children through informal teaching and hands-on renovation work at a school. Working alongside local educators and community staff, you’ll build practical skills in communication, teamwork, and classroom leadership while helping create a more welcoming learning environment. Learn to plan engaging lessons promoting learning through play. Help children practice their English, numeracy, and motor skills through reading sessions, teaching basic writing, number games, and flashcards.

You will gain unique insight into island life through a diverse range of cultural experiences, beginning with basic Fijian language lessons to help you connect with the local community. Your immersion continues with a traditional sevusevu ceremony alongside the village chief and hands-on workshops in indigenous crafts, such as sasa broom making and basket weaving. You’ll also learn to prepare authentic local dishes in a traditional lovo earth oven and join in the local passion for sport with a friendly rugby match.

Discover the breathtaking landscapes of Nadi and Fiji’s natural and cultural diversity during weekend excursions. Spend a full day on the South Sea Island tour, enjoying adventures in the water through snorkeling, kayaking, and semi-submarine tours. You will also have the chance to unwind at the relaxing Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pools, wander through the scenic Sabeto Gardens, shop for souvenirs in local markets, and explore historic sites that will give you a deeper understanding of Fiji’s rich heritage.

Why choose Fiji for your Community Development program?

With the islands’ strong sense of community and warm hospitality, Fiji offers a unique setting for experiential learning. Students are encouraged to step beyond the classroom and out of their comfort zones to actively contribute to local initiatives in schools and within the local community.

By working alongside children and teachers, you will develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and public speaking, while supporting the education and development of the next generation. Through renovation work, you will be able to see the tangible, lasting impact of your efforts on the school’s infrastructure.

Cultural immersion is an essential part of this program, encouraging students to build confidence as they navigate a new language and unique cultural settings. By living and working within the community, engaging in activities from traditional sevusevu ceremonies and lovo preparation to local rugby matches, students develop independence, adaptability, and global awareness. The combination of educational service, authentic cultural exchange, and regional exploration of sites like South Sea Island and the Sabeto Hot Springs creates a well-rounded experience that supports both personal growth and meaningful community engagement.
