Psychology is a relatively new science in Mongolia and as a result, the field is developing rapidly. With Projects Abroad, you have an opportunity to experience this growth first hand as a volunteer on the Psychology Project. The project, which is based in Ulaanbaatar, involves assisting local psychologists at one of our partner health care centers.
The facilities where you will be placed are of a basic standard, but they are hugely significant in the communities they serve. Many patients often travel vast distances to attend appointments and their options for mental health care are limited.
This project is a great option for students and recent graduates looking to apply the skills and knowledge they acquired during their studies. To participate, you will need to have completed at least three years of psychology related studies.
Volunteering on the Psychology Project in Mongolia
All Psychology volunteers are placed at one of our partner psychology treatment centers. These include a maternity hospital, a cancer hospital, and a counselling service center.
In accordance with Mongolian law, you will not be able to treat or consult patients directly during your placement. However, the role you take on at the center will be an important one. You can expect to get involved in various tasks, such as conducting research and preparing training and consulting materials for one of the qualified psychologists at the center. Depending on your level of experience, it is also possible to perform psychometric tests, interviews, and behavioral observation.
At your placement, you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge with the local psychologists, as well as learn from them. They will welcome any ideas you have for discussions or presentations on theories of psychological treatment. Our local partners may also encourage you to write a report, such as an overall assessment of the center, or suggestions on how they could strengthen the services they offer to patients.
Once a month, you will also take part in a medical outreach in Ulaanbaatar. This is a valuable service to the community and will help give you a deeper understanding of the healthcare system in Mongolia.
