Interning in Medicine in Ethiopia with Projects Abroad

A Projects Abroad medical intern poses for a photograph with an Ethiopian doctor.

Interns work at Sante Medical Center, which is a private clinic in Addis Ababa established in 2006 by a young Ethiopian doctor. Your exact role within the hospital will be determined by your level of medical experience as well as the enthusiasm and effort that you demonstrate to the local staff.

You will have the opportunity to learn about many different conditions and treatments including hemodialysis and HIV/AIDS. You can shadow doctors in a variety of departments, including general medicine, nursing, and the laboratory. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases and will learn about conditions that are rare in developed countries.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ethiopia Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

Did you know? 2 out of 5 children in Ethiopia do not grow to their full height due to stunting, which is a lifelong condition that results when children miss out on critical nutrients during their first 5 years.

You will stay with a host family for the duration of your time interning with Projects Abroad. You will be part of our volunteer community and can spend time exploring Addis Ababa and the surrounding areas with other interns and volunteers.

Volunteer Profile Former volunteer Lea Jacobsen shares her experience on the Medicine project in Ethiopia
Lea Jacobsen
My time working in Ethiopia was split between working at a private clinic helping nurses working with kidney dialysis patients, and helping physical therapists at an NGO working with children who came from difficult backgrounds. At the clinic I was extremely lucky to be put with some very hard working and generous nurses who went out of their way to make me feel welcome. They taught me a lot of Amharic and at the end of my stay gave me a wonderful coffee ceremony to say goodbye. Read more...
