Volunteer rugby coaching in Ghana, coach rugby overseas with Projects Abroad in Ghana

Coach Sports Abroad: Coach Rugby in Ghana

Rugby is an emerging sport in Ghana, with many Ghanaians now discovering its attractions. But up until now, it is a sport which has barely penetrated Africa, other than in the far south of the continent.

Volunteer Rugby Coaching with Projects Abroad

Rugby training

Volunteers in Ghana will have the chance to coach rugby in schools in and around Cape Coast. We are working alongside George Avoola Ladipo, the coach of the Junior National Rugby team, to help develop the sport in all of the Cape Coast Region. George is a qualified coach who is eager to pass on some of his coaching skills and experience to willing volunteers who want to help him bring Rugby to Ghana.

Practices at the rugby placements can sometimes have as many as 50 children, so any help volunteers in Ghana can provide George is very welcome. Even if volunteers assist simply with setting up drills and general organization, it will give George the opportunity to focus more on the individual aspects of the game. Once you become more confident you can get more involved in the sports coaching side of things, and even lead sessions if you wish.

Volunteering Abroad on a Rugby Team in Ghana

Passing the ball

Volunteer coaches working on our rugby project in Ghana will shadow George on a daily basis, helping with all elements of coaching within a selection of schools in the area. You will help with fitness training, ball work, skills sessions and explaining the rules to children who are much more familiar with soccer! You also assist with the organization of rugby games between the various schools, and help with the development of a league system.

This is a great opportunity for anyone passionate about rugby to get involved in its development in a country where it is in its infancy. You will be able to pass your enthusiasm for Rugby on to a new generation of youngsters and - who knows – in a few years time you may even find that you have been coaching members of the first national Ghanaian Rugby team!

This project is available for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
