Annually, we send over 3,500 enthusiastic volunteers to 23 developing countries to teach conversational English, join Care projects, and gain a wide range of work experience. We also work in projects in the fields of medicine & healthcare, journalism, veterinary science, law & human rights, and conservation & environment.

Job Opening at Projects Abroad Canada

Program Advisor – Toronto, Canada

In order to accommodate the increasing influx of Canadian inquiries, we are currently hiring a full-time program advisor for our Toronto office. If you are dedicated and competent, this position offers fantastic potential for upward mobility within the organization. You will be allowed a large amount of freedom in planning and executing a variety of recruiting efforts - from designing materials, making connections with school administrators, and visiting universities in the US and Canada. Working longer and at times unusual hours - especially while traveling - will be expected of you. After you have gained some experience, there also exists the opportunity to work with volunteers in our destination countries.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to applicant inquiries via email, telephone and meetings.
  • Research marketing information about our destinations and projects.
  • Contact schools and universities to set up events and create relationships.
  • Plan and coordinate business trips.
  • Travel to represent Projects Abroad at events and to hold presentations about our programs.
  • Facilitate writing, production, design and distribution of marketing materials.
  • Monitor online and printed materials.
  • Coordinate logistics with international administrative and operational offices.
  • Assist the Director for Projects Abroad Canada as needed.

Requirements

  • BA or above is required; a liberal arts major is desirable.
  • Should be creative, self-reliant and flexible.
  • It is an absolute necessity that you have spent a significant amount of time working or traveling in a developing country, preferably doing volunteer work in one of our destination countries.
  • Excellent phone and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong organization, problem solving and time management skills
  • Ability to use MS Office specifically with file merging and excel.
  • Developed writing and proofreading abilities.
  • Interest in international affairs.
  • You should be prepared to work in a fun and small office environment.
  • Possess a full driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Fluency in oral and written French is a strong asset.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen and have a valid passport.

Assistant Country Manager Positions

We put enormous importance on the welfare of our volunteers during their time with us overseas - our global team is committed to providing our volunteers with the experience of a lifetime.

All year round we recruit and send Assistant Country Managers to work alongside our local teams in each destination. This back up and support for our volunteers is vital to the success of the organization.

Your Role as Assistant Country Manager

Working alongside our team of local staff, you will be responsible for making each new arrival feel welcome and secure in their new environment.

You will help maintain effective communication between the overseas office and the US and Canadian offices.

You will assist in setting-up new work placements and finalizing accommodation arrangements for future volunteers.

The job is busy and can be physically demanding. You should be prepared to work flexible hours on any day during your time overseas.

Our requirements

You should be:

  • A graduate
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written
  • Physically fit and able to pass a medical assessment, if necessary
  • Mature in attitude and outlook
  • Able to remain calm and efficient under pressure
  • An excellent communicator with people of all ages and cultures
  • A team player
  • Flexible and able to take direction and accept feedback
  • Friendly and personable, with customer service skills: you must respond well to others
  • Enthusiastic to work in a different culture and relish the opportunity of working in a challenging environment

Contract, salary & benefits

Contract:

Projects Abroad Assistant Country Managers are employed on a 6-month contract, subject to a three-month probationary period. An offer of employment is dependent upon receipt of satisfactory references, a medical assessment (if necessary) and personal interview.

Salary & benefits:

Projects Abroad pays a basic living allowance, international flights, comprehensive travel and health insurance, board & lodging as well as agreed day-to-day work-related expenses.

The selection process comprises of the following stages:

Screening of your application:

The 1st thing to do is send your CV and covering letter to us detailing all relevant qualifications and experience. If you are successful at this stage you will be placed on file and invited to attend an interview. If your application is not successful you will be advised in writing. We try to acknowledge all applications within fourteen days of receipt.

Interview:

You will spend half a day at our UK head office in Sussex during which time you will be interviewed by members of our Overseas Team.

If you are successful at the interview you will be offered a position and will undergo training before you start work overseas.

Before you start

As a new member of the team you will receive a full briefing (lasting one day) in our UK head office before starting your position overseas.

Our local staff overseas will give you further training on arrival and will work with you very closely, throughout your stay. They will be happy to give you their advice throughout your time with them.

Life after Assistant Country Manager

Your time with Projects Abroad doesn't necessarily have to finish at the end of your initial 6-month contract.

Very often there's the option of transferring to another country for a second six months.

From time to time there are also positions available in the Overseas or Recruitment Teams in the United States and Canada, which you may also apply for after having completed your time as an Assistant Country Manager.
