With increasing international work opportunities in tourism, business, and higher education, Moroccans are eager to develop their English language skills. They hear French regularly on TV and in songs but they have very little exposure to spoken English. As a volunteer on a Teaching project with Projects Abroad, you will have a hugely positive impact on the children you teach.
Volunteer teaching in Morocco will provide you with the opportunity to learn about this fascinating country and its people. This experience is available to anyone with an interest in helping others improve their English language skills. You do not need to have any previous teaching experience and we do not require you to take a TEFL course. Whether you want to volunteer during your gap year, career break, or as a volunteer vacation, you will have an important role to play and your efforts will be greatly appreciated.
Rabat has an ancient history but is rapidly modernizing and the English language learning system is also modernizing with it. The old fashioned, grammar based English syllabus has recently been overhauled to focus on communication skills and topical issues, and Moroccan teachers are gradually adapting to this new approach. By having volunteers like you in the classroom, to bring English language and culture alive, it will help to motivate and encourage students and to make the new system work.
I found the teaching very rewarding because the students were very enthusiastic about learning English… Practicing with native speakers will undoubtedly help them with future studies and job prospects. Read more...
Volunteering as a Teacher in Morocco
As a volunteer teacher in Morocco, you will live and work in the vibrant and cosmopolitan capital city of Rabat. The city is a fascinating confluence of old and new and an intriguing blend of African, Spanish, French, and Arabic cultures.
English is the third language in the Moroccan educational system, after Arabic and French, and is taught to students from the age of ten. We offer a variety of placements in Morocco, including elementary schools, high schools, and language centers. In whichever one you choose, your main role will be to teach English and help students improve their conversational skills.
Did you know? Morocco’s two official languages are Arabic and Tamazight, but French is also taught in school, and is required for all students.
At your placement, you may also want to get involved with extra-curricular activities to teach different subjects. You can get involved with drama and an English club, helping students express themselves creatively. If you have interests in other areas which you would like to bring to your students, please let us know when you apply.
Teaching volunteers also work with associations, which provide free English lessons to students from under-privileged backgrounds who would not otherwise be able to afford to learn English. These classes are usually small with between about 10 to 15 students generally aged between 15 and 21. Here you may teach the class alone, or work in a pair with another volunteer.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Morocco Teaching Management Plan.
Volunteering at a Teaching Placement in Morocco with Projects Abroad
As a volunteer teaching English in Morocco, you will find that you are much in demand, not just from your students, but from other groups within the community. Your local teaching colleagues will be eager to practice their spoken English with you, and you will doubtless find yourself giving informal lessons to members of your host family. This is a fantastic way for you to create bonds with these people, and begin to feel at home in their culture.
Everyone on a volunteer placement with Projects Abroad in Morocco stays with a local Moroccan host family. You will find them incredibly welcoming and they will doubtless be eager to find out all about you and your life back home. Take plenty of photos with you and be prepared for lots of questions.
You can join the Teaching Project in Morocco for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
