If you are looking to volunteer as a sports coach abroad and want to experience what it is like to work with children, then the After School Sports Project in Peru is perfect for you. You can volunteer as part of a gap year, a career break, or as a meaningful vacation experience.
Projects Abroad volunteers teach soccer, basketball, and volleyball at a variety of placements, some of which operate all year round. You will make a positive impact on the community by teaching sports to school children from the local community. You will also help them increase their fitness levels and give them the support to build confidence. You will play a vital role in the community, helping to make sporting activities accessible to all children.
Volunteering Abroad on an After School Sports Project in Peru
As a volunteer on the After School Sports project in Peru, you will be placed at a partner sports academy, where you will assist sports coaches with help provide training to students. Depending on your placement, ages of the children, and your ability to lead a team, you will have the opportunity to run your own training sessions with the teams, under the supervision of the local coaches.
You will be responsible for preparing a schedule of activities and setting goals for the students to reach. You could find yourself organizing fitness sessions for a small group of children, coaching advanced soccer skills to teenagers, or running a basketball competition and educating children on sporting principles.
After School Sports volunteers can choose to focus on one of the following sports: basketball, soccer, or volleyball. You will, however, have a chance to get involved with other sporting activities, such as assisting physical education teachers, once you have completed the hours allocated to your chosen sport.
Your role as an After School Sports Volunteer
Soccer: You will work with children from the ages of 7 to 15 years old, Monday to Thursday, from 3pm to 6pm. There are between 80 and 130 children that take part in this project each year. Children are generally divided into groups: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Some teams participate in highly competitive soccer leagues, so they will need all the motivation and help they can get. This project runs all year round, but attendance may decline at the end of the year, due to Christmas and New Year.
Basketball: The basketball academies welcome up to 80 dedicated students and are growing steadily. Volunteers will be placed at one of the academies, either Escuelas Deportivas Municipales or Apu Pitusiray and will work Monday to Wednesday from 3pm to 6pm and on a Thursday from 5pm to 8pm. Saturdays are reserved for competitive matches against other basketball teams. Children train in a multi-purpose hall or at a local government sports center. This project runs all year round, but attendance may decline at the end of the year, due to the Christmas and New Year holidays
Volleyball: Volunteers work with girls from the ages of 8 to 15 years old. You will be placed at a school and work with 15 to 20 girls on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3pm to 6pm. Although this project is still growing, volunteers will be able to see the girls improve their skills and grow their confidence. The project is not available from December until March and at the end of July.
You can join an After School Sports project in Peru for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
