Volunteering on the Care & Community Project with Projects Abroad during your winter break is a great way to give back while getting away from frigid temperatures. Join us in Cape Town, South Africa, where you will work with Projects Abroad staff and other volunteers to run a summer vacation program for underprivileged children.
Most of the children attending come from severely disadvantaged backgrounds. The vacation program gives them a safe space to learn, play, and grow during the summer, which means that you will have an important role to play as a volunteer.
The program is based in Muizenberg, very close to the beach, so most activities will be beach-based. Here, you will teach and play sports such as soccer and touch rugby and run creative arts and crafts activities like making Christmas cards. In addition, we hold educational presentations and workshops that cover a range of useful topics for the children.
All volunteers will also participate in some additional activities such as lending a hand at other organizations, like a homeless shelter and a children’s home.
After a busy day of volunteering, you will go home to your host family, with whom you will live for the duration of your project. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the diverse South African culture first-hand and enjoy delicious home-cooked local cuisine.
When you are not volunteering, there are plenty of activities to pursue in your free time. You will have time to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery that Cape Town and the surrounding area has to offer. You can view the city from the top of Table Mountain, visit the African penguins at Boulders Beach, or explore the famous Garden Route!
