Volunteering on the Public Health High School Special in the Philippines with Projects Abroad is a great way for high school students to learn more about the field of healthcare in a developing country. Based in San Remigio, a municipality near to the city of Bogo, volunteers work in a community health setting where they focus on conducting health campaigns and outreach work for the benefit of local people. This project is ideal for students interested in gaining experience in healthcare and those planning to pursue medical studies.
In the Philippines, the majority of your time will be spent working with local families doing health screening activities such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and waistline measurement as baseline information for health promotion strategies. Along with other volunteers, you will then design simple health promotion strategies to be implemented within the duration of two weeks.
On the Public Health High School Special, volunteers work in teams to organize community exercises as part of the health promotion strategy. A community day will also be arranged by the volunteers. There is also an opportunity for volunteers to participate in the medical mission session for the community with the local doctors. Here, volunteers can assist with basic procedures such as taking vital signs, assisting the dentist in dental procedures, and assisting the pharmacist in dispensing of medicines.
You will be working alongside local doctors, nurses, and social and health workers, reaching out to as many people as possible.
During your two weeks in the Philippines, you will live with one of our local host families. This gives you an insight into a different way of life and a deeper understanding of the culture around you. On the weekend, you will get the opportunity to explore Capitancillo Islet – a small, beautiful, and mystical coral island near Bogo. Capitancillo Islet has a protected marine sanctuary, three dive sites, and a lighthouse.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Philippines Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
