Based in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s largest city, Projects Abroad’s Medicine project is an exciting opportunity for high school students to learn about medical systems in a developing country firsthand.
During their time on the High School Special, volunteers will be under the supervision of a Projects Abroad Coordinator and will spend time in the different departments of a general hospital. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit a hospital specializing in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
Over the course of the project, volunteers will also attend an interesting workshop on medical practices in Sri Lanka, and participate in outreach activities during a two-day medical outreach program in a local community center or childcare center.
On the weekend, Projects Abroad will arrange a trip to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This project is also available as a 3-week program on select dates. If you stay longer, you will be able to spend more time at your placement and with your fellow volunteers. You will also be taken on more weekend trips, allowing you to experience more of the local culture and do more sightseeing.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Sri Lanka Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
