Gain practical experience and increase your medical knowledge as a volunteer on the Medicine High School Special in the Philippines. By shadowing local professional doctors and taking part in medical outreaches, you will get your medical career off to a head start. This project is also a great opportunity to learn how medical practices in another country differ from those in your own.
In the Philippines, Dengue fever and non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease are a big problem, and there are very few clinics and healthcare facilities in rural areas. Your role as a volunteer is therefore vital for some communities to learn about these health issues, and how to take preventative action. An important part of your project work will be to lead educational workshops on health and hygiene, and to participate in medical outreaches to reach people in remote areas, all under the guidance of our staff.
Most of your time will be spent in a local hospital, where you will observe local doctors and nurses while rotating between different departments. These departments include:
- rural health units
- treatment unit
Depending on the availability of staff, you could also spend time sitting in on consultations, in the nutrition department, and learning more about the records department.
During your stay in the Philippines, you will live with a local host family, which will expose you to daily life and cultural practices. Along with fellow volunteers you can play games and eat authentic Filipino cuisine. We have organized a weekend trip for you to Capitancillo Islet, a beautiful small coral island near Bogo.
Here you can spend time snorkelling, visit the protected marine sanctuary, and relax on the beach with your new found friends.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Philippines Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
