Volunteering on the Conservation High School Special in Kenya over the summer is a chance for you to experience living and working in the heart of an African wildlife reserve. For two weeks, you will participate in various activities at Soysambu Conservancy, a 48,000 acre reserve in the Great Rift Valley. The reserve is a haven and breeding ground for a diverse range of wildlife, including the endangered Rothschild’s Giraffe.
Along with the rest of your group, you will contribute to ongoing conservation activities. Every day is different and your work will be varied, giving you the chance to learn plenty of new skills and experience different things. One of the main aims is to protect and monitor the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. In addition, you will be involved in removing alien plants, repairing fences and roads, preventing soil erosion, and collecting data on different species in the area.
Your group is accompanied at all times by our experienced conservation staff. They have great knowledge of the region’s geography and wildlife and will pass on their expertise and enthusiasm to you.
In addition to working in the reserve, you will also participate in community outreach work for one day. The outreach activities will vary depending on the needs of the community at the time. They can include teaching children about the importance of protecting the environment and wild animals, teaching English, playing sports like soccer, or building a toilet or oven.
During your time in Kenya, you will stay at the reserve in dormitories along with volunteers from the Standard Conservation Project. There is a communal area in the front of the volunteer accommodation with stunning views of the reserve.
On the weekend, you will get the opportunity to visit one of Kenya’s famous National Parks.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Kenya Conservation Management Plan.
