If you have a passion for the outdoors and have a strong interest in marine conservation, join us in Cambodia on our Conservation & Community program for high school students. The project is based on the tropical island of Koh Sdach, where you will live and work alongside other volunteers in the local village. Facilities are basic, but the opportunities there include learning to dive and contributing to important conservation and community work.
During your stay on Koh Sdach, you will complete an internationally recognized PADI Open Water course to qualify you to dive. In the initial stages (done in shallow water), you will learn how to breathe, clear your mask, and equalize pressure. You will also become familiar with the buddy system and underwater sign language.
Once you are certified, you will use your new skills to assist with conservation activities and survey dives. This is vital work, as your efforts to conduct research and collect data become part of preserving animal species and habitats. Each Conservation volunteer in Cambodia also participates in Dives against Debris, an initiative that works to remove debris from the ocean that can destroy habitats and smother marine life.
Another aspect of the program is education. We spend a lot of time at the local school educating children about the importance of protecting the environment. You will help out with this by running awareness workshops and beach clean-ups, and you could also find yourself playing games, teaching English, and doing some basic renovation work.
In Cambodia, you will live in shared volunteer accommodation. This can include shared rooms in bungalows, shared dorms in volunteer accommodation at the conservation placement, or a guesthouse.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Cambodia Conservation Management Plan.
