If you're interested in working with children, joining a conservation project, practicing your Spanish skills, and living in a gorgeous country, the Care & Conservation project in Costa Rica gives you the chance to combine all of these things! Costa Rica is one of the most stable and well-developed countries in Central America, creating a great environment for volunteers who want to experience Latin America.
On the Conservation part of the project you will work at the Barra Honda National Park, beginning with an extensive tour of the park. You'll then be involved in a variety of ongoing projects, which may include reforestation work, mammal, butterfly, and bat studies, maintenance work, and restoring trails. Volunteers live in shared dormitory accommodation in the park itself and there is a communal area where everyone eats together.
You will spend your other week working with children at one of our Care projects in Heredia. You will be placed in either a kindergarten or day care center. Volunteers can help out by playing games with the children and running activities like arts and crafts sessions. You will work at one of the Care placements during the day and your evenings will be filled with activities including optional dance lessons. Living in Costa Rica provides a great opportunity to speak Spanish with local people if you're interested in improving or picking up some language skills. While on this portion of the trip you will either live with a local host family or in hostel accommodation nearby the placements.
"It was definitely a step out of my comfort zone, but what I left with was absolutely worth it. I regret not taking the chance to participate in projects like this earlier in life, because there is so much to learn about different countries and places."
A weekend trip to an outdoor destination is included for all High School Special volunteers. Experience all the beauty this magnificent country has to offer while helping out on a volunteer project. Pura Vida!
Without phone signal or internet access, recreational time was often spent playing card games. Torches, toads and fireflies, also provided my friend and I with endless hours of fun as we made up all these games off the top of our heads. You soon improvise when you’re phone isn’t working! These may not sound like you’re typical activities of choice but it really made for some of the funniest memories. Read more...
This project is also available as a 4-week program on select dates. If you stay longer you will be able to spend more time at your placement and do more conservation work (two weeks at each project). Those joining us on the 4-week program will also get extra visits and activities arranged during the weekends.
