Based in Cape Town, Projects Abroad’s Care & Community project gives you the opportunity to work with disadvantaged children in one of the local townships. As a volunteer, you will learn about South Africa’s culture while making a positive impact on children’s lives.
Volunteers work at day care centers. You will help care for young children and promote early childhood development. This will include running educational games that focus on literacy levels.
During your time abroad you will also get involved with various practical work, such as helping to run a soup kitchen for a local community. You will also participate in general repair work at a day care center, which could include painting, cleaning, and renovation work.
Volunteers on this project in South Africa will live with a local host family, along with some of the other High School Special volunteers.
You will also have time to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery that Cape Town and the surrounding area has to offer. You will view the city from the top of Table Mountain, visit the African penguins at Boulders Beach, or explore the legendary Garden Route.
This project is also available as a 4-week program on select dates. If you stay longer you will be able to spend more time at your placement and do more to contribute to Early Childhood Development. Those joining us on the four week program will also get extra visits and activities arranged during the weekends, such as visiting Robben Island or a local market and doing a Peninsula or Township Tour.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our South Africa Care Management Plan.
