Projects Abroad’s Care & Community Projects in Ghana are based in either Cape Coast or the Akuapem Hills. For two weeks, you will have the opportunity to make a significant difference in other people's lives as well as your own. You will learn about another culture as you explore and get to know different areas of Ghana. In both locations, you will be hosted by a local family, which allows you to become fully immersed in the Ghanaian way of life.
* This trip offers an escorted flight available on select dates from New York - JFK.
Volunteers based in Cape Coast will spend their time working in an care center or a local school. Your time will be divided between renovating and decorating the building for half the day and playing with and caring for the children for the other half of the day. By putting in a new floor or painting a mural on a neglected wall, you will be making a meaningful and lasting contribution to the placement.
Volunteers in the Akuapem Hills will become part of a small and friendly community. In the mornings you will be working on a community project, helping to paint and renovate a local school. In the afternoons you will work at one of the childcare projects in the Hills, playing games and arranging activities for the children.
As a volunteer in Ghana, you will leave a lasting impression on the children by giving them the extra attention and support that is lacking in their daily lives.
On the weekend we'll take you to visit either one of Ghana's stunning palm fringed beaches or the Kakum Rainforest Reserve near Cape Coast where you can hike through the jungle and experience the canopy walkway high in the trees. You will also have the opportunity to visit Cape Coast's slave fort.
For those who want to do a longer stay, this project is available as a four week program on select dates. On the four week program, volunteers will experience living and volunteering in the Akuapem Hills. You will also get extra visits and activities arranged during the other weekends, and will go on a trip to Cape Coast.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ghana Care Management Plan.
Every day I got to know the children better. They showed me that to be happy you just have to be able to have fun, which I did every day of the trip, and to appreciate things more. The children also taught us the games they played, and I often find myself, in my Ghana pants (everyone should own a pair), singing “shaky shaky shake that body”. The children became my friends and I miss them every day. Read more...
