As a Physical Therapy intern in Bolivia with Projects Abroad you can help care for children in a variety of facilities in the Cochabamba area. Students interested in or studying physical therapy and qualified therapists are all welcome to contribute and will gain valuable international experience.
Physical Therapy interns can work at various centers for disabled children. The centers help children through a variety of sessions including physical therapy, hydrotherapy, psychology, and speech therapy. Interns with skills in these other areas would also be welcome.
Interns in Bolivia can work at the Burns Unit of a local hospital as well. Here you will be involved in social integration, functional rehabilitation, and sensorial recovery of the patients. Patients are children from newborns to fifteen years old. They will have experienced a range of burns from scalding to household accidents. Facilities are basic, but the staff are excellent and you will be able to learn a lot on this placement.
It is also possible to get involved in identifying and working with children from local orphanages who need to receive physical therapy or other treatments.
Spending my days treating and playing with the children was rewarding. Not only did I become their physical therapist, I became their friend. Some outpatient children would make sure they came in at certain times to ensure they saw me. Read more...
Interning for Physical Therapy in Bolivia with Projects Abroad
As with all our Medicine & Healthcare projects, your exact role will depend on your level of experience and knowledge. You will often work on a one-to-one basis with children offering additional physical therapy care and concentrated attention to help speed their recovery.
While in Bolivia, you will live with one of our host families for a complete cultural experience. There will also be many other Projects Abroad volunteers to spend time with and explore Cochabamba city or the surrounding areas.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Bolivia Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
Interns on all Medicine & Healthcare internships in Bolivia should be at least 18 years old and will need intermediate Spanish in order to communicate directly with the majority of medical staff and patients. Many interns who lack confidence in their Spanish normally take a Language course or join a Teaching or Care project before beginning their Medicine & Healthcare internship. This gives you the opportunity to improve your language skills before starting the medical part of your project.
If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills volunteering abroad as a professional in Bolivia.
