Children play an educational game at a Care placement in Belize.

By volunteering with Projects Abroad on a Care project in Belize, you will contribute by supporting disadvantaged children in care centers, kindergartens, or a primary school. Whether you are on a gap year, career break, or looking to experience meaningful travel over a vacation, you will have an important role to play and your impact will be greatly appreciated in the community.

Although there are kindergartens and schools in Belize that provide quality education for children, many families are not able to afford additional costs such as uniforms, books, and stationery supplies. On a Care project, you will be able to help these children at care centers, kindergartens, or at a primary school, and contribute to their educational development.

Our Care placements are based in the town of San Pedro.

Volunteering in Care Centers and Kindergartens in Belize with Projects Abroad

In Belize, Projects Abroad works with care centers, kindergartens, and a primary school, that provide care and education to children from impoverished backgrounds. These placements are often understaffed and have limited resources, so they are in desperate need of volunteers to help give children the best care possible. As a volunteer, you will be a welcome pair of helping hands for the local staff, who are often too busy to give the children the individual attention they need.

Did you know? Most children born in rural communities in Belize do not have proof of birth, with no identity to prove their existence, they are denied essential services such as health care.

You will help with day-to-day practical tasks, such as ensuring that the young children have been washed and fed, as well as organizing creative and physical activities such as arts & crafts and games and teaching basic literacy and numeracy and songs. Volunteers often also assist the local staff with tasks such as washing dishes and cleaning, which are essential to the daily running of the care centers.

With the older children, volunteers can help with homework, and can have one-on-one sessions with children who are struggling with numeracy and literacy. You could also play sports such as basketball, soccer, and Frisbee, and help kids develop their team skills.

Whether you are helping children learn to read, playing sports with them, or teaching them a new game, the time and attention you give them children hugely beneficial. Any skills you have to offer are welcome.

Volunteer Profile
Gabrielle C.
During my time in San Pedro, I worked with ABC Preschool. I have always had a passion for helping children, so this was the perfect placement for me. The first time we visited the preschool, we did a lot of different activities with them. We went around to each classroom and brought the kids pictures of the Easter bunny to color because Easter was coming up in a few weeks. It was so interesting to me to see how excited these kids got over coloring a picture of a bunny! Spending the day coloring with these children really taught me how to appreciate the little things in life and to not just overlook them.Read more...

Your Role as a Care Volunteer in Belize

Social development, friendship, and support are the key things you can offer as a volunteer. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel.

Projects Abroad is happy to provide extra help to volunteers working on Care projects. This may include buying some paints or art materials or arranging a day where all the volunteers in Belize help to renovate a play area at one of the centers or kindergartens. Suggestions from volunteers are welcomed and we are open to any ideas you may have to help benefit the lives of the children with whom you are working.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Belize Care Management Plan.

This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.

While you’re in Belize, you might also consider joining a 1 week Conservation & Environment Project. For more information, please visit our Diving & Marine Conservation in Belize Project page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
