What will I do on this project?
As a volunteer sports coach in Belize, you’ll teach physical education classes at disadvantaged schools. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do during your placement:
- Coach sports to children at disadvantaged schools
- Implement creative coaching techniques
- Expand your horizons by learning new skills
Your work will focus on the following aspects:
Conduct sports lessons
The most important aspect of your time as a sports coach in Belize is teaching young children. You will work with local coaches to develop their skills in sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball or athletics. You will work in tandem with local staff to coordinate training programs that encourage them to use their skills, develop their fitness and encourage a love for getting active. Your programs will need to be inventive and fun!
Research and plan creative coach methods
Local coaches might not have access to the same information as you. Before and during your project, you can research the latest trends in coaching your sport. You can introduce these new methods to coaches and students, and share knowledge that they can continue to use for years.
Expand your horizons by learning new skills
Being given the chance to implement, practice and refine your coaching techniques can be of great value to you going forward. Living in Belize is also an excellent opportunity to learn Spanish or improve on your language skills if you already speak it.
Where will I work in Belize?
You’ll be placed in the former fishing village of San Pedro. The town has a quaint Caribbean charm and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. San Pedro has also become northern Belize’s most popular destination. This is thanks to its premium diving sites, birding opportunities, and water sports.
You will work at a public elementary school. These schools often lack the funding necessary to hire a trained sports teacher, and this is where you can help. It’s also a great way to gain sports coaching work experience in Belize.
Measuring our impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
Leisure activities and free time
Belize is a beautiful tropical country bordered by the clear, blue Caribbean Sea. There are plenty of ways to spend your free time here, whether you’re a beach lover, a culture buff, or an adventure seeker.
During your free time, you can go snorkelling along the colourful Belize Barrier Reef. For a more relaxed atmosphere, you can spend time on one of the white-sand beaches, sipping freshly squeezed papaya juice in the warm sun.
There are also plenty of cultural activities, so you can get a glimpse into the history and heritage of the country. You can visit Mayan ruins or spend the day wandering through an art gallery or museum.
During your trip, you’ll be surrounded by volunteers from around the world. So you can choose to explore independently or with volunteers from our different projects in Belize.
Safety and staff support
Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
