Is this trip to India right for me?

If you're looking for mind, body and spiritual enlightenment, then our Discovery Tour in India is for you. Over the two weeks, you’ll practice yoga techniques, learn about the country and its culture, and offer service back to the community. 

The trip is open to all adventurers over the age of 18 who are looking to advance their yoga skills while seeking overall enlightenment. The yoga classes cater to all skill levels so we encourage beginners to take advantage of this learning opportunity. 

During your time in India, you’ll stay in shared accommodation with the rest of your group. This is a great opportunity to get to know people from all over the world and learn about their own unique cultures and backgrounds.

 Day 1 – Arrival in Kochi

Your project will take place in the tropical city of Kochi situated in Kerala. The moment you land, our staff will be by your side. They’ll fetch you from the airport and take you straight to your accommodation so that you can freshen up. After settling in, you and your group will receive a full induction to the country and culture so that you feel better prepared for your trip ahead. 

To end off the day, you’ll be treated to a Kathakali dance show after dinner - what a welcome to India!

Day 2 – Yoga and explore Kerala

You’ll start your day with an introduction to yoga. Your teacher will assist you with the various poses and help you improve your technique over the coming weeks. You’ll find that by the end of your trip, even the most beginner learners will turn in passionate yogis. 

After a morning of self reflection, you’ll head out to explore the Kerala Backwaters. This peaceful and picturesque area is a palm-lined network of canals, rivers, lakes, and lagoons that run inland from the coast of Kerala. You’ll get to enjoy the lush green landscape and diverse wildlife as you meander past rice paddies and villages.

Day 3 – Yoga and cooking class

Following your morning yoga, you’ll go on a gourmet food tour where you’ll discover a unique melting pot of Portuguese, Dutch, British, and local Keralan cultures, reflected in Kochi’s sumptuous cuisine. You’ll also take part in a cooking class, where you’ll learn the health benefits of local spices and learn to cook the best recipes Kerala has to offer. We hope you bring hungry bellies and are ready for your taste buds to be wowed.

Days 4 and 5 – Yoga and community work

After your morning yoga class, you’ll help to build a vegetable and spice garden at a local school. School gardens are a wonderful way to use the schoolyard as a classroom. You’ll reconnect students with the natural world and the true source of their food, and teach them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts and skills.

Day 6 – Yoga and Fort Kochi

You’ll and your group will rise early for a morning yoga session. After practicing your technique, you’ll explore Fort Kochi with its colonial-era homes, charming shops and markets, and the city’s famous Chinese fishing nets that flank the harbor. Here, you’ll find many of Kochi’s most interesting attractions, including St. Francis Church, the Santa Cruz Basilica, the Paradesi Synagogue, and Mattancherry Palace. 

Days 7-9 – Tea museum and Western Ghats

Start your day with a visit to the Tea Museum and factory in Munnar, where you’ll learn about the growth of this more-than-a-century-old tea plantation district. After this, you’ll begin your three day trek through the Western Ghats. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized as one of the hotspots of biological diversity in the world. With an average elevation of 915m, an incredible array of wildlife and 27% of the country’s flowering plants being found in the mountains, makes it an ideal place for trekking.

Day 10 – Yoga and women’s empowerment project

Your morning yoga class will be the perfect way to relieve “hiker hobble” after a weekend of trekking. Following your yoga class, you’ll get to join a local women’s empowerment project for the day. You’ll teach young girls and women various skills that will benefit them in the future. This can include entrepreneurship skills, business English lessons or other skills they can use to secure a better future.

Day 11 – Yoga and Ayurveda

After your morning yoga, you’ll attend an Ayurveda course. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means ‘the science of life’ and is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. You’ll get to learn all about this ancient holistic health system. You’ll be taught how you can apply this wellness practice to your daily life and how you can use it to help others. 

Days 12 – Yoga and community work

Start your day with a relaxing session of yoga before contributing to projects in the community. You’ll assist with light renovation work at a local school or a house in the community. This will include tasks like tiling, fixing doors and windows, and painting. You’ll be working in the community so use the opportunity to really get to know the people you’ll be helping.

Days 13 – Yoga, community work and farewell dinner

You’ll enjoy your final yoga session and reflect on how much you’ve learned in just two weeks. This is a good moment to find your inner zen and feel proud of your achievements.

You’ll spend the rest of the day finishing up renovation work in the community. Before you leave, you’ll get to see the fruits of your labour and the impact you’ve made in the community. 

Your day will end with a traditional farewell meal with the rest of your group. It’s a well-deserved meal after a day of hard work in the community. Use this time to share memories and stories from your trip.

Day 14 – Departure from Kochi

 Before your departure, you’ll have the chance to do some souvenir shopping. You can pick something up to remind you of the incredible time you’ve had in India. Don’t forget to say your goodbyes and exchange contact information as these group experiences often lead to lifelong friendships.

Food and accommodation

You'll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad travellers during your stay in India. This is a great way to get to know each other, share experiences, and explore your surroundings during your free time together.

The accommodation is safe, clean, and comfortable. Your programme fees include three meals a day.
