What will I do on this project?

During your time abroad, you’ll help give local teachers and caregivers the extra support they need. Your main tasks will include:

  • Help local staff provide strong educational foundations for underprivileged children
  • Raise hygiene awareness among the children at a care facility
  • Help with the general upkeep of your childcare placement

Volunteer work with children in Jamaica with a group focuses on the following areas:

Help local staff provide strong educational foundations for underprivileged children

You’ll work at a daycare center for children from disadvantaged communities. Your focus will be on early childhood development and literacy. This could involve doing activities like:

  • Play a game to teach the alphabet
  • Teaching a song that helps kids learn to count
  • Do arts and crafts or play a ball game to help with hand-eye coordination
  • Build puzzles
  • Go outdoors to play sports

We encourage you to do activities that will help children learn the skills they need to meet developmental milestones for their age.

Raise hygiene awareness among the children at a care facility

Improving hygiene practices is one of our main focuses in Jamaica. When you volunteer with children, you can encourage them to practice good hygiene everyday. Make sure they brush their teeth properly, and wash their hands before meals and after using the bathroom.

Help with the general upkeep of your childcare placement

Depending on where you’re placed, you could help with the regular upkeep of your placement. Some of the centers we work with are in need of a fresh coat of paint or educational resources.

You can add visual elements to the daycare center, like painting a wall mural or designing some educational posters. Some placements might just need a touch of color to brighten the environment. By making the facility more visually stimulating for the children, you can leave a lasting impact at the placement.

Where in Jamaica will I work?

You’ll live and work in Mandeville, the largest town in the Manchester parish. Mandeville is a college town, and there are many communities who lack access to education, healthcare, and proper sanitation.

You’ll be placed at a childcare center. You’ll help support local staff, as the student to teacher ratio is high. The children come from different backgrounds, and some have significantly challenging circumstances.

Jamaica is known for its vibrant but relaxed culture, where the beats of reggae are the soundtrack to daily life. Bask in the sunshine and explore some amazing sites with your group and our staff.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Jamaica Arrival Procedures page.

What are the aims and impact of this project?

The main goal of this project is to support early childhood development at disadvantaged childcare facilities.

Poverty and social inequality are significant problems in Jamaica. The childcare centers we work with are understaffed, with a high student to teacher ratio, and they lack resources. This makes it difficult for local teachers to ensure that each child learns the skills they need.

This is why we work with them to improve early childhood development, and raise literacy levels. You’ll become part of our ongoing efforts and give kids the extra support they need. For example, you can work with a small group of struggling students to help them with reading. Or, you could take a group outside to play a ball game to improve hand-eye coordination.

Everything you do will be added to our Global Impact Database. This allows us to monitor each child’s progress.

Part of your role also involves encouraging kids to practice good hygiene everyday, like washing hands before eating and brushing teeth properly. This will help keep the children healthy.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in Mandeville. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Jamaica and have a truly unique experience.

We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.
