Projects Abroad is looking to employ a Marine Scientist to manage all operations and logistics associated with the volunteers’ survey dives and research on the Conservation Project. Including the supervision of the volunteers, meeting the daily needs of the volunteers and organisation of survey related activities. The Marine Scientist will also help when needed on other conservation related projects and duties.

The Koh Sdach Archipelago is located on the Cambodian coastline and has a population of 4000 people, predominately fishermen. The island has access to electricity and 3G 24/7, and running water about 8 hours a day. The area is under development which makes our presence and impact more and more significant for future generations.

The project main focus and goal is together with the local fishery (CFI) as well as FFI ( Fauna and Flora International) is to use our data to find suitable areas for MPA's (Marine Protected Areas). The project work includes Seahorses scientific monitoring and data-collecting, sea grass monitoring, beach clean-ups, waste management, resource-building to assist in training locals for long term sustainability.

Our Seahorse-project is a collaboration between us and that aims to record and understand population trends of seahorses in locally and globally, currently we are one of the biggest contributors to this database.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organisation and supervision of all our survey dives
  • Training of volunteers in survey dives and marine life identification
  • Leading scientific survey dives;
  • Project and office administration;
  • Assisting the Project Manager with all aspects of the project


  • Good written and spoken English
  • Proven experience of organising and leading people
  • Scientific/research/salvage/dive experience
  • Experience of working with NGOs/volunteers/young people
  • Familiarity with field operation logistics
  • Ability to organise and co-ordinate the day to day running of all field and other activities involving the volunteers, project staff, other participants and the host community
  • Administrative and time management skills
  • Knowledge of local culture and language
  • Excellent written/oral communication and presentation skills
  • Tropical marine life identification
  • Relevant degree in marine conservation - Bachelor degree or higher in marine biology or environmental sciences
  • PADI Instructor
  • Pro-activity and decision making skills
  • Emergency situation handling ability


You will be employed on a permanent contract, subject to a three-month probationary period. An offer of employment is dependent upon receipt of satisfactory references and a personal interview.
