Volunteer care for sick dogs on the Animal Care project in Romania

The Projects Abroad Animal Care internship in Romania is based at a dog rescue center, on the outskirts of Brasov. This voluntary internship is a great choice for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, is passionate about the protection of animals, and wants to gain some practical experience working with animals.

Whether you are a gap year student, a student considering a career in veterinary medicine, or a professional on a career break, you will have an important role to play caring for rescued dogs. There is a great deal of work that needs to be done and interns on this project should be ready to get stuck in with whatever tasks need to be done at the center.

The dogs that end up at the shelter are stray dogs from the street. They are brought to the shelter where they are given a full medical check-up and are treated for parasites and any other problems. The dogs are fed every morning and taken to an exercise pen either individually or in groups.

As an intern, you will provide a welcome extra pair of hands to help local staff. You can get involved in all aspects of running the shelter, from feeding, training, and exercising to assisting with surgical procedures in the small on-site veterinary clinic. Your level of involvement will of course depend on your skills and qualifications. You may also have to help with bathing and grooming and cleaning the kennels.

All interns stay with a local host family in Brasov, offering you the opportunity to immerse yourself fully in Romanian culture. Your host family will be eager to share their day-to-day life with you and may even be able to teach you some of the local language. You will use local transport to travel to work each day. This internship is available all year round.

This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.

If you are looking to gain experience working in a veterinary practice instead, we also have Veterinary Medicine Internships in Romania.

Interns seeking a different cultural experience have the option of participating on a more unique project for one week the end of their project.
