If you are interested in coaching Physical Education in schools abroad, Peru is a great place to volunteer with Projects Abroad. Physical Education is extremely popular in the Sacred Valley of Peru and many children and teenagers are eager to improve their skills. You could teach children a variety of sports, such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball.
You can be a sports coach volunteer without any previous coaching experience, although it's great if you do have some. Volunteers of all ages and stages of life are welcome, whether it's a gap-year before college, a summer trip, career break, or even as an alternative vacation. All we ask is a passion for sports and a desire to coach others.
Volunteering as a Physical Education Teacher in Peru
As a Physical Education volunteer, you will coach sports in schools alongside Physical Education teachers in the morning. In the afternoons, you will work at the Apu Pitusirary sports center in the town of Calca in the Sacred Valley.
At the sports center, volunteers can choose between coaching basketball, soccer and volleyball. There are over 150 children who attend the center, ranging from 6 to 14 years old. This gives our volunteer coaches an excellent variety of ages and talents to work with. Though the center currently offers just soccer, volleyball and basketball, they are eager to develop new programs, so please let us know what sports you are interested in.
Physical Education volunteers usually work Monday to Friday, 8am to 1:45pm. During your time in Peru, you will live with a local host family who will introduce you to daily Peruvian life and culture. When you are not working, you can use your free time to explore your beautiful surroundings and socialize with the friendly Projects Abroad volunteer community.
You can also combine a sports placement with a Teaching or Care project, teaching English at a school or taking care of young children at a local kindergarten. Just let us know where your interests lie once you have applied and we will match you to a suitable school.
All in all, my experience here has been great. I look forward to going to work every day. The support that Projects Abroad provides me is unbeatable. I have received many phone calls, as well as home visits from the supervisors. They make sure that I am feeling healthy, comfortable, and enjoying my work. If there were ever any issues, Projects Abroad would take care of the situation immediately. I am very grateful to have their support throughout my journey here. Read more...
You can join a Physical Education project in Peru for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
All volunteers participating on standard projects in Peru have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. For more information, please visit our Rainforest Conservation & Environment Project in Peru page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
