Medical Internships in Togo
Projects Abroad offers medical internships in hospitals, clinics, and HIV/AIDS centers located in the Togolese capital of Lomé. Whether you are on your gap year, a medical student, or a trained professional, you will have the chance to work in a wide range of medical settings with Projects Abroad in Togo. As an intern you will gain a full experience of medical work in a developing country, including the opportunity to see a wide variety of treatments and surgical procedures and give much needed support to patients.
Upon arrival, you will meet the Projects Abroad Medical Coordinator, who will act as your supervisor. He will introduce you at the hospital or clinic, discuss your interests with you, and confirm your schedule in agreement with the medical staff at the hospital or clinic for the duration of your stay.
Your role is that of an intern. The hospitals where we work provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your medicine and healthcare skills. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions on almost a daily basis that you would not normally see in Europe or North America, such as malaria and typhoid.
Interns with no experience in the medical field are welcome to join us and work with doctors and nurses in small private clinics. Interns can learn from consultations, observe minor surgeries, and spend time in the laboratory and pediatric and maternity wards. There is also the option to intern at HIV/AIDS centers, which give free treatment and consultations to patients. Here interns help to raise awareness and teach about safety, acceptance, and tolerance.
Interns who have medical experience can also work at one of two public hospitals. There is the opportunity to work in a variety of departments including pediatrics, psychiatry/psychotherapy, dentistry, radiology, obstetrics, maternity, ENT, dermatology, chemical pathology, orthopedics, pathology, hematology, anaesthesia, and neurology.
Interns on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.
