Medical Internships in Mongolia
Interning on a Medicine & Healthcare internship in Mongolia can be an eye-opening experience. As an intern you will do a great deal of observational work alongside some of the most skilled and inspirational doctors in the country. The facilities are generally very basic and patients will often have traveled vast distances to attend appointments.
Medicine & Healthcare internships in Mongolia are based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, where you will be working in busy central hospitals or specialized clinics dealing with pediatrics, maternity or perhaps trauma patients. The doctors are eager for you to achieve as much as possible during your internship by working in a number of different departments. Medicine and healthcare practice in Mongolia is typically 'Western', but there are also a number of private complementary medical clinics where you can spend some time to help broaden your medicine and healthcare experience.
The supervisors on our Medicine & Healthcare internships in Mongolia have a lot of time for enthusiastic interns, as one of the doctors we work with recently explained:
“The Medicine & Healthcare volunteers are able to pose any questions about areas that they would like to explore further and I’m always delighted to spend the necessary time providing the relevant information to expand their practical and theoretical knowledge. I still maintain good contacts with many former volunteers, who repeatedly stress their desire to become qualified and proficient doctors, partly based on their experience here in Mongolia. I hope that this continues and that any future volunteers feel that they can gain some experience while working in our hospitals together with our qualified doctors, in a way that will be beneficial to them regardless of their area of expertise.” Dr. Erdenechimeg, Pediatric Hospital
Physical Therapy, Nursing, & Midwifery Internships in Mongolia
Hospitals in Mongolia also welcome Physical Therapy, Nursing, and Midwifery interns, whether you are fully qualified or looking to gain some initial experience. All three projects run in large public hospitals in the Bayangol district of Ulaanbaatar; Physical Therapy interns work in the State Trauma Hospital, Nursing interns in the State Children's Hospital, and Midwifery interns in the State Maternity Hospital.
“I spent a great deal of time in the maternity and pediatric hospitals we work with in Ulaanbaatar, and there is undoubtedly a massive need for our volunteers. Our supervisors at these hospitals are incredible people; they could have left the country for far better-paid jobs in South Korea, but choose to stay in their own country, working for a meager salary. These doctors have a huge workload and really appreciate the help that a volunteer nurse, midwife or doctor can provide.” Robert Kidd, Assistant Manager in Mongolia
Medical Elective Internship
You can do an Elective in Mongolia in Medicine, Nursing or Midwifery.
If you are currently enrolled in medical school and wish to do your elective in Mongolia, you will most likely be working in a large hospital in Ulaanbaatar. You will shadow one of our supervisors who are very experienced at working with western medical and healthcare students. They will be eager to test out your knowledge, as well as give you the benefit of their training and experience.
Outside of the hospital you will live with a local host family, who will provide you with all your meals outside of your normal working hours. When you aren’t at work there is plenty to do in and around Ulaanbaatar, and the other volunteers and interns are all centrally located, which means there is always someone around to go out with.
