Intern on the Physical Therapy project in Mongolia does a check up on a patient

Projects Abroad Physical Therapy internships in Mongolia are based hospitals in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, where interns are able to gain international experience working in the physical therapy department.

As an intern, you will help with both inpatient and outpatient care at the hospital. The facilities are basic and patients will often have travelled long distances to receive treatment.  You will have to be up to the challenge to be creative in order to increase the level of service you can help provide.

There are also private complementary medical clinics where you can spend some time assisting with physical therapy care.

Interning Abroad as a Physical Therapist in Mongolia with Projects Abroad

Your role as a Physical Therapy intern in Mongolia will vary. You will partly have an observational role, shadowing the doctors, nurses and, other therapists while they work. Interns also usually have the chance to work with patients directly, helping with exercises and using equipment. The hospital staff will help you to achieve as much as possible during your placement. Being enthusiastic and demonstrating your abilities to your local colleagues is the best way increase the amount of hands-on work you get offered.

Projects Abroad organizes regular medical outreach work for interns in order to provide a greater understanding of the Mongolian healthcare system and provide healthcare services to the local community. Although these are not always directly related to physical therapy, you may wish to take part to learn about other aspects of medical work in Mongolia. Previous outreach programs have included assisting with basic medical check-ups at a community center for homeless people and assisting with a hand hygiene campaign at one of the local hospitals.

We also offer monthly training workshops providing medical interns with lessons about traditional treatments, the history of the Mongolian healthcare system, and teaching practical skills, such as how to check blood pressure.

While interning abroad in Mongolia you will live with a Mongolian host family. Your host family will be welcoming and invite you to become part of their family while you stay with them. You will also meet other Projects Abroad volunteers. There is a lot to see and do in the area to enjoy with the other volunteers.

Volunteer Profile Alumnus Mary Anne Cabelin shares her volunteer story from the Physical Therapy project in Mongolia
Mary Anne Cabelin
My favorite part about working was being able to walk around and do rounds with the physical therapists. It was also great being able to see the progress of the patients. For instance, there was a patient who could barely walk on her first day with us and held on to us very tightly, but a few weeks later, she was able to walk on her own without any of our help. It was truly rewarding! Read more...

Physical Therapy internships in Mongolia are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.

Interns seeking a different cultural experience have the option of participating on a more unique project for one week at the end of their project.
