Tamazight Language Course in Morocco

Learn Tamazight in Morocco with Projects Abroad

The spoken languages of Morocco are as diverse as Morocco itself. Arabic and French are generally spoken in the cities, but in the countryside and desert you are more than likely to hear Tamazight.

Tamazight is the language of the indigenous people of Morocco. It is closely related to the Berber languages spoken in Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and the Egyptian area of Siwa, as well as by large Berber communities in parts of Niger and Mali. The oldest recorded Tamazight inscription dates back around 2500 years.

Tamazight Language Courses with Projects Abroad in Morocco

You can learn Tamazight through Projects Abroad on an intensive Language Project, where you will receive 15 hours of lessons each week.

Volunteers who join our Nomad Project often come to the capital of Rabat for our Tamazight Language Project for two or four weeks before embarking on their desert adventure.

Alternatively, volunteers and interns doing projects in Rabat can undertake a short 14-hour or 30-hour course in Tamazight alongside their project. If you are volunteering in Morocco for at least twelve weeks you could complete a 60-hour Tamazight language course alongside your volunteer placement.
