Care & Community in Senegal
| Summer 2 weeks |
|

Based in the picturesque town of St. Louis in northern Senegal, this placement offers the chance to experience a taste of Senegalese culture and contribute to the local community. This is a great project for students interested in childcare and anyone wanting to experience a cultural immersion.
You will live with a local host family and your days will be spent doing a variety of different activities at a kindergarten or center for street children. You will spend time supporting the children and also help to renovate and decorate a local school or other community center. With the help of your fellow volunteers you will be able to transform the building, providing a fresh and colorful environment for the children.
During the weekend you will visit the desert, where you can relax and socialize in a tented camp surrounded by pristine sand dunes. There are also social activities arranged throughout the two weeks including drum and dance lessons and a meal at a local restaurant.
Senegal is a friendly French-speaking country in West Africa. St. Louis is a picturesque town near the sea where French, Wolof, and other languages are spoken. Thieboudienne, also known as ceebu jen in Wolof, is a traditional dish made from fish, rice, and tomato sauce with carrots, cassava, and other vegetables. The name of the dish comes from the Wolof words for rice and fish.
