By volunteering with Projects Abroad on our Physical Education project in Tanzania you can help teach children and young adults the importance of sports and inspire them to be healthy and active. You can volunteer on this Physical Education project in Tanzania without any previous experience in coaching, although it is fantastic if you already have some.
Volunteers of all stages of life are welcome - students on a gap year or summer break or professionals on a career break or volunteer vacation. All we ask is that you have a passion for sports and a desire to help others develop their own physical fitness.
Soccer is widely played all over Tanzania. As a volunteer you will often see young children kicking around homemade soccer balls in local villages. Even though soccer is the most popular sport in Tanzania, children are excited to participate in a wide variety of sports so feel free to come up with new ideas as a Sports volunteer.
Coach Physical Education in Schools in Tanzania
Whatever sports you enjoy, if you have a passion for developing youth sports you can make an impact as a volunteer PE coach in Tanzania. Physical Education volunteers work in primary and secondary schools in USA River, a small rural community on the outskirts of Arusha.
As a Physical Education volunteer in a school you will be teaching PE classes alongside local teachers. In the mornings you will usually help with the basic PE lessons geared toward making sure every student gets involved in a diverse range of activities both individually and as a part of a team. You will be working with children of all ages depending on when their PE classes take place.
In the afternoons, the work will involve coaching teams of school children separated onto different levels - beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The teams practice together to prepare themselves for competing in local tournaments.
Tanzania Physical Education Volunteers
By working to involve children and teenagers in sports in Tanzania you will be actively helping improve their fitness and health. Sports also give children a sense of belonging as part of a team with a shared passion and goal. This in turn has positive benefits for the wider society by engaging youth in sports outside of school, which can keep them away from less wholesome activities, and give them structure and purpose.
While volunteering abroad you could dedicate your time to the sport you love or help with a range of lessons. Just let us know where your interests lie once you have applied and we will match you to a suitable placement.
You can join the Physical Education project in Tanzania for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
