The Projects Abroad Music & Dance Project in South Africa is ideal for anyone with an interest and skills in the field of music or the performing arts. This exciting project allows you to get involved in teaching underprivileged children and teenagers and encouraging a love of the arts, especially music and dance.
South Africa is incredibly diverse culturally and this is embodied by its traditional and modern music and dance. Whether you are on a gap year, career break, or volunteer vacation, volunteering to teach music and dance gives you the opportunity to share your knowledge in disadvantaged communities through outreach programs.
Volunteering on the Music & Dance Project in South Africa
As a volunteer on the Music & Dance Project, you can choose to focus on two of the following areas:
Please let us know which two options you want to be involved in when you apply.
Teaching Music in Cape Town
You have the option to teach music to young students, from ages 7 to 18, at a school in Cape Town. You will be able to teach them how to play a musical instrument, provide vocal training, and also help them understand basic music theory. A typical work week is Mondays to Fridays during school hours.
In the near future, we are also planning to start a community band or orchestra. Students are currently learning how to play the guitar, piano, violin, saxophone, and clarinet, and they are always eager to try something new. You have the option to focus on the instrument of your choice and to teach any aspect of music. If you play a woodwind instrument, we would recommend bringing your own instrument to the project (we also advise speaking to a Projects Abroad staff member about insurance in this case).
Singing is also popular among the students and many of them are part of a small choir. If you have experience in singing or choir-directing, your help will be greatly appreciated. This option also includes traditional music lessons, where students can share and learn cultural and tribal songs.
To get the most out of teaching music, you are expected to have a background in music, basic knowledge of musical theory and some practical ability.
If dance is your preference, you can teach ballet or modern dance to local school children in Cape Town. You should have a background in dance in order to participate in this part of the project.
Community Outreach Program with Projects Abroad
South Africa is home to a number of disadvantaged communities that lack resources. The opportunities for locals to learn or grow in the field of music or dance are limited, and this is where you can make a significant impact by teaching music or dance where it is needed.
All volunteers participating on standard projects in South Africa have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
