If you are considering taking your Medicine Elective in Peru, you will gain an immeasurable amount of valuable work-experience alongside skilled medical professionals. Our Medicine program in Peru is based in the city of Cuzco, in the Sacred Valley.
We work with several hospitals in the city. The facilities are generally of a basic standard, although the huge disparity between rich and poor in Peru means that there are also a number of well-equipped private hospitals in the country.
You must be a medical student to do an Elective placement. Projects Abroad are experienced in catering for students on their Medicine Electives. We can organize with your university to ensure your requirements are met, and our in-country staff will be able to help coordinate your placement and work with you to complete any specific paperwork you may have.
In Peru you will be assigned a supervisor who will be a qualified medical professional. They will ensure your experience is worthwhile and you learn from your time at the placement. They will discuss case studies with you and answer any questions you have. Be prepared to take notes. You will be very busy and will need to refer back to them.
Our Projects Abroad Medical Supervisor has many years of experience in the social health sector in Cuzco and provides regular group meetings with all the medical interns. This allows you the opportunity to ask questions, reflect on the work you have been doing and learn about different topics related to the medical field in Peru.
Medical Student Electives in Peru with Projects Abroad
Your role will be mainly observational. You will shadow doctors and other medical staff throughout their day. You could be placed at Es Salud hospital, which is the biggest hospital in Cuzco. This hospital is modern and well equipped and interns can work in a variety of departments with specialist medical professionals. If you are specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, we also work with a specialist unit. There are also other hospitals and clinics available.
For all Medicine placements in Peru, an intermediate level of Spanish is required.
While you are in Peru you will stay with one of our local host families. Here you will be able to really improve your Spanish speaking skills. On your time off you will be able to explore the delights of Cuzco and the surrounding area with our Projects Abroad volunteer community.
I came to Peru with the aim of getting a really broad exposure to all aspects of medicine in a developing country for the benefit of my medical studies and that's exactly what Projects Abroad enabled me to do. I not only came away with a life-long friend, I learnt a lot, including salsa and I had the best time of my life. Read more...
Medical Student Electives in Peru are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
All volunteers participating on standard projects in Peru have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. For more information, please visit our Rainforest Conservation & Environment Project in Peru page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
