As a Projects Abroad Physical Education volunteer, you can teach local children sports such as volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track and field.
Physical strength is a high priority in sports in Mongolia, with the most popular sports being wrestling, horse riding, and archery. However, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track and field, and other sports are starting to catch on due to the internationalization of the country ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The schools we work with are often very poor and cannot afford the necessary equipment for children to participate in these sports on a regular basis. Even when they can, the standard of teaching is poor, because the teachers have simply not had the required sports background. This is where you can help as a volunteer.
Volunteer Teaching Physical Education in Schools with Projects Abroad
Projects Abroad is based in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. During the school year there are many opportunities to get involved with coaching a variety of sports. If you specialize in a particular sport and have a good knowledge of the game and how to coach it effectively then you will be much in demand. The schools we work with are also happy to have coaches with a simple love of sports in general, and the enthusiasm to develop the same in the others.
You do not have to have previous experience. You can volunteer as a Sports Coach as part of a college summer break, gap year, during a career break or as part of an alternative vacation. Anyone with a passion for sports can participate.
Volunteering Abroad on a Physical Education Project in Mongolia
This project offers you a chance to play a role in the local community. You can use your athletic talent while interacting with Mongolian teachers and students. Your efforts are sure to be greatly appreciated and you will find the development you see in your students to be incredibly rewarding.
You can join a Physical Education project in Mongolia for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a longer period. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period. Volunteers who can only join us for a short time may be paired up with another longer term sports volunteer.
Volunteers seeking a different cultural experience have the option of participating on a more unique project for one week at the end of their project. For more information, please visit the Nomad Project in Mongolia page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
