Volunteering for Professional Psychiatrists in Mongolia
As a qualified psychiatrist, you can make a significant impact volunteering with Projects Abroad in Mongolia. You will be placed at the National Center for Mental Health, about 100km from Ulaanbaatar, where you will work alongside local psychiatrists to help treat mental health conditions.
The National Center for Mental Health opened in 1985 and is the first and only mental hospital available in the country. The hospital has 450 beds and an outpatient facility dealing with childhood and adolescent psychiatric cases, general adult psychiatry, addictions (drug or alcohol misuse), and counseling.
This project is ideal for qualified professionals looking for volunteer work abroad, as well as psychologists on a career break.
How can volunteer psychiatrists help in Mongolia?
Psychiatry is a fairly new science in Mongolia. This means that your contribution will be an opportunity to help improve local medical services. There are a variety of ways you can get involved, the most important of which are using your knowledge and training to help local staff.
During your time in Mongolia, you will assist with:
- Helping local staff assess and treat mental health conditions
- Organizing and conducting training for fellow psychiatrists and other doctors through presentations and workshops
- Introducing new methods and theories of psychological treatment
You will be expected to work from around 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. The hospital has 440 medical staff who will welcome your collaboration and the opportunity to enhance their own knowledge and skills.
It is important to note that patients may not be able to communicate in English. Your project supervisor and Projects Abroad staff will provide support where possible if needed.
This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.
What will I gain from this project?
Volunteering abroad will allow you to gain experience of working in the developing world. You will be able to work alongside fellow professionals and share ideas about treatments. You will also improve your ability to think creatively, and to work with limited resources and across cultural boundaries.
Through working with local professionals, you will learn about the Mongolian culture and way of life. They will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. This kind of ‘cultural exchange’ often helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
